Chapter 134: What do you want us to be
I slowly opened my eyes, taking in the sight of Seraphina's face, still peaceful in sleep. Her usually fierce expression was softened, her lips slightly parted, her hair tousled and spread out over the pillow.
There was a serenity in her that I rarely saw, and it made my chest tighten with emotion. How could someone so strong, so capable of commanding armies and wielding immense power, also be the source of such warmth and comfort? I marveled at the contrast, at the way she could be both my shield and my sanctuary.
I brushed a few strands of hair away from her face, careful not to wake her. But even as I did, her eyes fluttered open, and she gave me a sleepy smile that made my heart skip a beat.
"Good morning," she murmured, her voice still thick with sleep.
"Good morning," I replied, smiling back at her. "Did you sleep well?"
"Better than I have in a long time," she said, her hand finding mine under the covers. She gave it a gentle squeeze, her thumb brushing over my knuckles in a way that sent a comforting warmth through me. "How about you?"
"I slept... better," I admitted, the truth of my words surprising even me. Despite the heaviness that had been on my mind, despite the dark memories that had resurfaced, I had found peace in Seraphina's arms.
It wasn't a perfect peace those memories still lingered at the edges of my thoughts but it was enough to let me rest, to let me feel safe.
"Good," she said, her eyes searching mine as if looking for any lingering traces of the fear and uncertainty that had plagued me the day before. "We have some time today. What would you like to do?"
The question caught me off guard. After everything that had happened, the idea of simply spending a day together, without the weight of the world on our shoulders, seemed almost too good to be true.
But as I looked into her eyes, I saw that she meant it. She wanted to give me this day, a day where we could just be Elara and Seraphina, without the titles, without the battles, without the burdens that had been thrust upon us.
"I don't know," I said honestly. "I hadn't really thought about it."
"Then let me take care of it," Seraphina said, a mischievous glint in her eye as she sat up, the covers falling away to reveal her bare shoulders. She leaned over to give me a quick, playful kiss on the lips. "Get dressed. We're going out."
"Out? Where?"
"It's a surprise," she said with a wink, slipping out of bed and heading toward the bathroom.
I watched her go, a mix of curiosity and anticipation bubbling up inside me. Whatever she had planned, I knew it would be something special. Seraphina had a way of making even the simplest things feel extraordinary, and I found myself looking forward to whatever she had in store.
After a quick shower and dressing in the simple yet comfortable clothes Seraphina had packed for me, I met her downstairs in the inn's small dining area. She was already there, looking effortlessly stunning in her casual attire, a smile playing on her lips as she handed me a small bundle wrapped in cloth.
"Breakfast," she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I thought we could take it with us."
I took the bundle, my curiosity piqued. "Where are we going?"
"You'll see," she said with a grin, taking my hand and leading me out of the inn.
The morning air was crisp and refreshing, the sun just beginning to warm the cobblestone streets as we walked hand in hand through the quiet village.
Seraphina led me toward the outskirts, where the buildings gave way to rolling hills and lush green fields. The further we walked, the more the village's sounds faded, replaced by the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze and the distant chirping of birds.
As we crested a small hill, the view opened up before us, revealing a stunning panorama of the countryside. The fields stretched out in every direction, dotted with patches of wildflowers and the occasional grove of trees. A small river wound its way through the landscape, its clear waters sparkling in the sunlight.
"This is beautiful," I breathed, taking in the sight.
"I thought you'd like it," Seraphina said, her voice soft as she stood beside me, her eyes scanning the horizon. "I found this place the last time I was here. It's peaceful, a place where you can just... breathe."
We stood there for a moment, simply taking in the view, the serenity of the landscape washing over us like a gentle wave. Then Seraphina gently tugged on my hand, leading me down the hill toward a small grove of trees near the riverbank.
When we reached the grove, Seraphina spread out a blanket she had brought along, motioning for me to sit. I settled down on the soft fabric, watching as she unpacked the bundle she had brought. Inside were two fresh loaves of bread, a small wheel of cheese, some fruit, and a bottle of wine.
"It's not much," Seraphina said, handing me a piece of bread and cheese, "but I thought we could enjoy a simple meal together. No worries, no responsibilities—just us."
"It's perfect," I said, taking a bite of the bread and savoring the fresh, earthy flavor. The simplicity of it, the act of sharing a meal in such a beautiful place, filled me with a warmth I hadn't felt in a long time.
It was a reminder that not everything had to be complicated or weighed down by the past. Sometimes, the simplest moments could be the most meaningful.
We spent the morning there, talking and laughing, the conversation flowing easily as we enjoyed our meal.
Seraphina kept the mood light, regaling me with stories of her adventures, some of them so outlandish that I couldn't help but laugh. It was a side of her I hadn't seen before, and I found myself falling even more in love with her, if that was even possible.
As the sun climbed higher in the sky, casting a warm, golden light over the landscape, Seraphina suggested we take a walk along the river. We strolled side by side, our hands occasionally brushing against each other as we followed the river's meandering path.
The tranquility of the place, combined with Seraphina's presence, made it easy to forget the troubles that had plagued me for so long.
At one point, Seraphina stopped, her gaze fixed on the water. "You know," she said, her voice thoughtful, "I used to come here whenever I needed to clear my mind. It's a place where I could think, where I could figure things out without the noise of the world getting in the way."
I looked at her, seeing a vulnerability in her expression that she rarely showed. "And what do you need to figure out now?" I asked gently.
She turned to me, her eyes soft and full of something that made my heart skip a beat. "You," she said simply. "Us."
Her words hung in the air between us, heavy with meaning. I knew what she was saying, what she was asking. Our relationship had always been intense, forged in the heat of battle and the chaos of our lives.
But now, in this quiet moment, away from all the noise and the danger, it was just the two of us. And that was both exhilarating and terrifying.
"What do you want us to be?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Seraphina took a step closer, her hand finding mine. "I want us to be whatever we need to be," she said, her voice steady and sure. "I want us to be strong enough to face whatever comes our way, together. But more than that, I want us to be happy. I want you to be happy, Elara."
Her words, so simple yet so full of meaning, brought tears to my eyes. I hadn't realized how much I needed to hear that, how much I needed to know that she cared about my happiness as much as I did.
In that moment, I knew that whatever doubts I had, whatever fears still lingered, I could face them as long as Seraphina was by my side.
"I want that too," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "I want us to be happy, Seraphina. But I'm scared. I'm scared of what's out there, of what's inside me. What if I can't—"
She silenced me with a gentle kiss, her lips soft and reassuring against mine. "You can," she whispered against my lips. "You're stronger than you know, Elara. And whatever happens, we'll face it together."
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. The depth of my feelings for her, the intensity of the connection between us, was overwhelming. But it was also the most real thing I had ever felt. And in that moment, I knew that no matter what lay ahead, I wanted to face it with her.
