Chapter 90: Another attack
"Do you think we'll ever have a moment's peace?" I asked, taking a sip of tea and looking over at Seraphina.
She smiled softly, her eyes reflecting a mixture of hope and determination. "We will, Elara. But we have to fight for it. Our enemies won't just disappear on their own."
I nodded, appreciating her resolve. "I know. It's just...sometimes it feels like we're always on edge, waiting for the next attack."
Seraphina reached across the table and took my hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "We're in this together. And as long as we stand by each other, we can face anything."
Her words gave me comfort, and I felt a renewed sense of strength. We finished our breakfast and decided to take a walk around the castle grounds, enjoying the tranquility while it lasted.
As we strolled through the gardens, Seraphina recounted stories from her childhood, sharing memories of adventures and mischief. I laughed at her tales, grateful for the lighthearted moments we could share amidst the tension.
Just as we rounded a corner near the castle walls, we spotted a group of five figures approaching. They moved with purpose, their faces obscured by hoods. My heart skipped a beat, and I instinctively reached for the dagger at my side.
Seraphina's grip on my hand tightened, and she glanced at me with a serious expression. "Stay close."
The figures halted a few yards away, their leader stepping forward and pushing back his hood. His face was marked with scars, and his eyes gleamed with malice.
"We have a message for you," he said, his voice dripping with menace.
"State your business," Seraphina demanded, her posture tense and ready for a fight.
The leader sneered. "House Draconis doesn't take kindly to interference. You should have stayed out of our affairs."
Before we could respond, the figures drew their weapons, and the fight was on. Seraphina and I immediately sprang into action, our movements fluid and practiced.
I parried a strike from one of the attackers, my dagger clashing against his sword. The sound of metal on metal rang through the air as we engaged in a fierce dance of combat. Seraphina fought beside me, her movements graceful yet deadly as she deflected blows and delivered precise counterattacks.
"Stay focused!" she called out, her voice steady despite the chaos.
The leader of the attackers lunged at Seraphina, but she dodged his strike with ease, countering with a swift kick that sent him staggering back. I took advantage of the opening, slashing at another attacker's leg, causing him to stumble and fall.
"Is this the best you can do?" I taunted, my confidence growing as we held our ground.
The attackers regrouped, their determination evident in their eyes. They came at us with renewed vigor, but Seraphina and I fought with a synchronization born from our trust and bond. We moved as one, our strikes and parries complementing each other perfectly.
One of the attackers managed to land a glancing blow on my arm, the pain sharp but manageable. I gritted my teeth and retaliated with a fierce slash, driving him back.
"Are you alright?" Seraphina asked, her concern evident even in the heat of battle.
"I'm fine," I replied, my focus unwavering. "Just a scratch."
The leader of the attackers, seeing his men falter, let out a frustrated roar and charged at us with reckless abandon. Seraphina met his assault head-on, her sword flashing in the sunlight as she deflected his wild swings.
"Enough!" she shouted, her voice filled with authority. "This ends now."
With a final, powerful strike, Seraphina disarmed the leader, his sword clattering to the ground. She pressed the tip of her blade to his throat, her eyes cold and unforgiving.
"Yield," she commanded, her voice leaving no room for argument.
The leader glared at her, defiance in his eyes, but he knew he was beaten. He raised his hands in surrender, his men following suit.
"We'll take them to the dungeon for questioning," Seraphina said, her voice calm but firm. "We need to find out who sent them."
As the guards arrived to take the captives away, I felt a mixture of relief and anger. The attack had been a stark reminder that our enemies were still out there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for any opportunity to strike.
"We can't let our guard down," I said, turning to Seraphina. "They'll keep coming."
She nodded, her expression resolute. "I know. But we'll be ready for them. And we'll find out who's behind this."
We made our way back to the castle, our minds already working on our next steps. The fight was far from over, but with Seraphina by my side, I felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. Our bond was our greatest strength, and together, we would protect our people and our home from any threat.
As we entered the castle, I couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding. The attacks were becoming more frequent and more brazen. It was clear that our enemies were becoming desperate, and that made them even more dangerous.
"Do you think House Draconis is behind this?" I asked Seraphina as we walked through the corridors.
"It's possible," she replied, her brow furrowed in thought. "But we can't jump to conclusions. We need to gather more information."
We reached the council chamber, where the council members were already gathered, discussing the latest attack. They looked up as we entered, their expressions a mix of concern and relief.
"We were just talking about the attack," one of the council members said. "Do you have any leads?"
"We captured five of the attackers," Seraphina replied. "They're being taken to the dungeon for questioning. We need to find out who sent them and why."
The council members nodded, their expressions serious. "We'll do whatever we can to help," another council member said. "This threat affects us all."
"Thank you," I said, feeling a sense of gratitude. "We'll need all the help we can get."
As we left the council chamber, I felt a renewed sense of determination. The road ahead was fraught with danger, but I knew that with Seraphina by my side, we could overcome any obstacle.
"We'll get through this," Seraphina said, her voice filled with confidence. "Together."
"Together," I echoed, feeling a sense of hope despite the challenges ahead.
We made our way to the dungeon, where the captured attackers were being held. The damp, dimly lit corridors added to the sense of unease, but we pressed on, determined to find answers.
As we approached the cells, the guards snapped to attention. "Your Highness," one of them said, bowing. "The prisoners are secured."
"Thank you," Seraphina said. "We need to speak with them."
The guard unlocked the cell door, and we entered, finding the five attackers seated on the cold stone floor. They looked up as we entered, their expressions a mix of fear and defiance.
"You have a chance to make this easier on yourselves," Seraphina said, her voice calm but firm. "Tell us who sent you, and we may show leniency."
The leader of the attackers sneered. "You think we'll betray our master so easily? You're deluded."
Seraphina's expression hardened. "You'll find that I have little patience for loyalty to those who seek to harm my people. Speak now, or face the consequences."
The tension in the cell was palpable, but the attackers remained silent, their resolve unbroken. I could see the frustration in Seraphina's eyes, but she remained composed.
"Very well," she said. "We have ways of making you talk."
As we left the dungeon, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The attackers' silence meant that we still had no clear idea who was behind the attacks. Our enemies were still out there, plotting and scheming.
"We need to keep digging," Seraphina said as we walked back to the castle. "There has to be something we're missing."
"I agree," I replied. "We need to be relentless. They won't stop until they've achieved their goals."
We spent the next few days questioning anyone who might have information, following up on leads, and searching for clues. It was exhausting work, but we knew it was necessary.
One evening, as we were reviewing our notes in the library, a servant rushed in, his face pale and his eyes wide with fear.
"Your Highness, my lady," he said, his voice trembling. "There's been another attack."
My heart sank. "Where?"
"The village near the eastern border," the servant replied. "It was set on fire. The villagers are in desperate need of help."
Seraphina and I exchanged a determined look. "We need to go," she said. "Now."
