Chapter 53: I have to go
"Do you think I'll ever get the hang of magic?" Elara asked, breaking a piece of bread and dipping it into the stew.
I chuckled, enjoying the playful tone in her voice. "You're already making progress. It's not about mastering it overnight. It's about the journey and the effort you put in."
She rolled her eyes dramatically. "Oh, wise Seraphina, imparting wisdom with every word. Seriously, though, I feel like a baby deer trying to walk for the first time."
"More like a baby deer with a sword," I teased. "You're doing great. Just keep practicing."
Elara laughed, the sound light and infectious. It was moments like these that made the difficulties worthwhile. Being with her, seeing her smile, made everything else fade into the background.
As we continued our meal, the door opened, and a servant approached, bowing slightly. He whispered something in my ear, and my relaxed demeanor shifted slightly.
"Your spy is waiting for you in your office, my lady," he said quietly.
I nodded, acknowledging the message. "Thank you."
Elara looked up from her meal, curiosity clear in her eyes. "What's going on?"
"Just some business I need to attend to," I replied, keeping my tone casual.
"Can I come with you?" she asked, her eyes wide and hopeful.
I shook my head, smiling gently. "No, it's alright. It's something I need to handle alone. Enjoy the rest of your lunch."
She looked a bit disappointed but nodded. "Alright, if you say so."
I gave her hand a reassuring squeeze before standing up. Making my way to my office, I felt the weight of duty settle back onto my shoulders. The informality of lunch with Elara was a welcome respite, but now it was time to deal with the more pressing matters at hand.
My office was dimly lit, the heavy drapes drawn to keep out the afternoon sun. The spy was already there, waiting for me with a solemn expression. He was a wiry man with sharp features and eyes that missed nothing. He bowed as I entered.
"My lady," he greeted.
"Report," I said, taking my seat behind the large oak desk.
"We've located the demon who's been causing trouble," he began, his voice low and steady. "He's been hiding in the abandoned ruins near the forest's edge. We've confirmed his identity and movements."
I listened intently, absorbing every detail. The demon had been a thorn in our side for too long, and it was time to put an end to it. "What's his motive?"
"Power and chaos, as always," the spy replied. "He's been rallying other demons, trying to form an alliance against us."
I nodded, the pieces falling into place. "And you're sure of his location?"
"Yes, my lady. We have him under surveillance. He hasn't moved from the ruins for the past three days."
"Good," I said, my mind already formulating a plan. "I'll deal with him personally."
The spy looked slightly surprised but nodded. "As you wish, my lady."
I stood up, the decision made. "Well, I have to go now. Alone."
He bowed again, recognizing the finality in my tone. "Be careful, my lady."
As he left the room, I felt a sense of grim determination settle over me. The path ahead was dangerous, but it was a necessary step to ensure the safety of our kingdom and those I cared about.
I glanced at the door, thinking of Elara. She had no idea of the battle that lay ahead, but I would face it for her, for us. Taking a deep breath, I prepared myself for the mission. It was time to confront the demon and end this threat once and for all.
The weight of responsibility settled heavily on my shoulders as I made my way through the dimly lit corridors of the palace. Each step echoed with purpose, my mind focused on the mission ahead.
The spy's information was solid, and now it was up to me to act on it. The demon needed to be dealt with, and I wasn't going to risk anyone else's life in the process.
As I exited the palace, the cool afternoon breeze greeted me. The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the courtyard. My horse, a sleek black mare named Nyra, was waiting for me, saddled and ready.
I mounted swiftly, feeling the familiar weight of my weapons at my side. The path to the ruins was a dangerous one, but I was prepared.
The journey through the forest was eerily quiet, the usual sounds of wildlife conspicuously absent. The trees seemed to close in around me, their branches casting twisted shadows on the ground. I kept my senses sharp, every rustle of leaves and snap of a twig putting me on edge.
After what felt like hours, the forest began to thin, revealing a clearing up ahead. I dismounted, leading Nyra to a hidden spot where she could wait safely. From here, I would proceed on foot. The ruins were just beyond the clearing, their crumbling walls barely visible through the thick underbrush.
I moved silently, every step calculated to avoid making noise. The air grew colder as I approached the ruins, a sense of foreboding settling over me. The structures were ancient, their stone walls covered in moss and vines. Time had not been kind to this place, but it provided ample hiding spots for anyone seeking to remain unseen.
As I crept closer, I could hear faint voices. My heart quickened, and I pressed myself against the wall of a dilapidated building, listening intently. The voices were low and guttural, speaking in a language I couldn't quite make out. Demon language, no doubt.
I peered around the corner, catching sight of the source. Two figures were standing near the entrance of what appeared to be a larger structure, perhaps the main hideout.
One was clearly a demon, his skin a mottled gray with sharp, angular features and glowing red eyes. The other looked human but had an aura that suggested otherwise. A demon sympathizer, perhaps.
I took a deep breath, steadying myself. This was the place. The demon I sought was somewhere inside, and I needed to be cautious. Any misstep could alert them to my presence, and the element of surprise was my greatest advantage.
I watched as the two figures conversed, their voices carrying a sense of urgency. They were unaware of my presence, which gave me a critical edge. I would need to find a way inside without being detected, a task easier said than done.
The entrance was heavily guarded, but I noticed a narrow pathway leading around the back of the structure. It was overgrown with vegetation, likely unused for years. I made my way toward it, moving carefully to avoid any noise.
The path was treacherous, with loose stones and thorny bushes threatening to give me away, but I pressed on, determined.
As I rounded the corner, the rear of the structure came into view. There was a small, partially collapsed doorway, barely big enough to squeeze through. It looked promising, and I approached it with caution. The inside of the building was dark, the only light coming from small gaps in the walls where the stone had crumbled away.
I slipped through the doorway, my eyes adjusting to the dim light. The air was thick with the scent of decay, and the silence was almost oppressive. I moved forward, each step carefully placed to avoid making noise. The corridor was narrow, lined with old, rotting wooden beams that creaked ominously under any pressure.
As I ventured deeper into the ruins, I could hear the faint sound of voices again. They were coming from a room up ahead, the door slightly ajar. I approached cautiously, peering through the gap.
Inside, I could see the demon I was after, his form unmistakable. He was seated at a makeshift table, surrounded by maps and documents. His eyes glowed with an unnatural light, and a sense of malevolence hung in the air.
I knew I had found my target, but I needed more information before I could make my move. I strained to hear their conversation, picking up bits and pieces. They were discussing plans for an attack, something big and dangerous. My mind raced, trying to piece together the information.
This was it. The source of the recent troubles, the threat to our kingdom, all centered around this demon. I felt a surge of determination. I had to stop him, but first, I needed to gather as much intel as possible.
I carefully backed away from the door, retreating to a safer spot where I could plan my next move. The mission was far from over, but I had taken a crucial step. The demon's hideout was discovered, and I was one step closer to ending this threat.
Taking a deep breath, I prepared myself for what came next. It was time to confront the demon and put an end to his schemes once and for all.
