Chapter 151 - 151 Bat-Wing Zombie
“Vertical Pupil” is an external implant. Song Jian had never encountered an equipment like this before, and there seemed to be no slot for it in the equipment section.
“If its attributes state that it’s meant to be attached to forehead, suppose I can just attach it directly?” Song Jian speculated and began to position the Vertical Pupil onto his forehead.
The moment the “Vertical Pupil” touched his skin, countless tiny tentacles sprouted from its back, burrowing wildly into Song Jian’s forehead like sharks drawn to blood.
A slight prickling sensation made the “Vertical Pupil” adhere firmly to Song Jian’s forehead. By the time Song Jian realised it, he was too late to take it off. The “Vertical Pupil” was rooted securely as though it had always been part of his forehead, immune to his attempts to remove it.
“I hope this thing isn’t permanent. Parading around with a metallic eye on my forehead might be unnerving for some.” Song Jian pulled at it robustly a couple of times. The “Vertical Pupil”, like a rooted plant, caused a raw pain each tug.
Song Jian could feel countless threads extending from the back of the “Vertical Pupil”, piercing deep into his skull like nerves. Soon, Song Jian felt as if the “Vertical Pupil” had become an additional organ that he could manipulate, like he had acquired a third eye.
Gradually, Song Jian could even perceive the world through the Vertical Pupil on his forehead. Three eyes remarkably expanded his visual field, and he could also shut the “Vertical Pupil” when required. The closed “Vertical Pupil” left only a faint silver scar that was quite inconspicuous unless scrutinized.
Shortly, Song Jian acclimatized to the existence of a third eye. Overall, the extra “Vertical Pupil” was quite useful to Song Jian. At least, he could see much farther at night, comparable to daylight, and it was a massive improvement over before.
From below, roars of monsters echoed up. The recent bout had attracted all the monsters in the vicinity. Standing on the roof and looking down, all the streets around were teeming with monsters, reminiscent of the onslaught when establishing safehouses.
Thankfully, the battle was over, and he was too far for the monsters to detect him. They were just idling aimlessly in the surroundings.
“Phew, it’s getting dangerous here. I should return to the manor for safety.” Song Jian thought to himself. Just as he was about to deploy his ability to Morph into Dark Cloud, the Vertical Pupil on his forehead spotted a huge mass of darkness in the distance flying towards him.
“Does someone else also have the ability to Morph into Dark Cloud? That seems unlikely!” Song Jian squinted and strained his eyes. Upon closer inspection, he realised it was a large group of winged monsters flocking in the sky.
“Holy Cow! There must be hundreds of them! This is insanity!” Song Jian was taken aback. These creatures appeared no different from common zombies, except, each one had a pair of wings resembling bat wings, with a thin layer of flesh coating the surface of the bones.
“Bat-winged zombies, level ten elite monsters. This is outrageous. Hundreds of level ten elite monsters… It’s too much” Song Jian rushed into the big hole of the entrance room atop the roof, making his way into the building.
Soon, the sounds of ‘pitter-patter’ came from above. Peering through the cracks, over a dozen bat-winged zombies fell from the sky, encircling the half-burnt body of the three-eyed zombie boss. They voraciously tore at the remaining flesh of the boss. Some even gobbled up the nearby ashes when they couldn’t get to the corpse.
From the distant rooftop, monstrous roars echoed. The bat-winged zombies descended like assassins in the night on bosses that hadn’t yet evacuated the rooftop. Packs of ten or even dozens of bat-winged zombies ambushed each elite boss. Some managed to escape inside the building while others were surrounded, killed and devoured by the bat-winged zombies.
Song Jian had tucked himself away in a room. Peering out the window, he could see that the roofs of the surrounding high-rise buildings had been occupied by the winged zombies. The elite bosses stood no chance against these winged zombies. The sounds of battle gradually faded, leaving only the sounds of the winged zombies tearing apart the bosss’ bodies.
“I hope these monsters would quickly leave after feasting on the bosses’ bodies,” thought Song Jian. With the sky taken over by a swarm of winged zombies, even if he were to morph into a dark cloud, escape would not be possible. The ground was teeming with even more monstrous creatures, making it more dangerous than the skies. Song Jian found himself trapped in this small building.
While hiding in a room, he securely sealed all doors and windows, just like on his first day in the game, waiting for the break of dawn. All of the winged zombies had assumed control over the roofs of the high-rise buildings around him. Some of the winged zombies had even broken into the top-level rooms. They seemed to have claimed this area as a temporary habitat.
Song Jian did not dare to make a noise, for fear of awakening the group of bosses. He had carefully kindled a bonfire in the living room and laid down by its side to rest. Although deliberate sleeping was not necessary in the game to restore energy, both vitality points and mental strength would quickly replenish during sleep.
Although Song Jian’s vitality points had already been filled due to the speed of their restoration, the mental fatigue caused from continuous battling was not so easily alleviated.
The night passed without a word. Early the next morning, as the fish-belly white spread across the sky, Song Jian was startled awake by a clamor of bellowing roars. Looking out the window, he saw all the winged zombies who had been roosting on the roofs for the night — gathering and flying into the distance.
“Phew, they finally left. Hundreds of these level-io elite monsters are simply terrifying!” Song Jian, whose heart had been hanging by a thread, finally let out a sigh of relief. He wondered how many elite bosses had fallen prey to these winged zombies over the night.
Growl- Growl- Growl-
Just then, Song Jian noticed that one winged zombie in a high-rise building opposite to his was stuck in the window. This particular winged zombie had broken into a room through a window for rest the previous day since there was no space left on the roof. Today, while attempting to leave, one of its wings was caught in the twisted steel protective mesh.
The winged zombie struggled violently and managed to break a piece of steel rebar, which then bent at an angle and caught its main bone. At this point, unless the infected zombie was willing to rip off its right wing, it would be stuck there.
“What a nice early morning surprise to get a level-10 elite monster at my doorstep. Not bad luck,” Song Jian said with a slight smile. Pushing aside the objects stacked next to the window, he craned his neck to look at the winged zombie that was a mere ten meters away, half of its body hanging from the window railing.
Crackling-
The window railing was being constantly tugged by the winged zombie, making rattling noises. The fixed rivets also began to loosen. It seemed as if the railing would be torn off by the winged zombie before long, and the creature would likely tumble down afterward.
“A fall from the tenth floor wouldn’t kill you, let me help you out,” muttered Song Jian to himself, as a thin, silvery veritical scar on his forehead slowly opened.
