She deliberated for a moment and texted him on WeChat: “Can you give me the money from last night?”

After sending the message, he didn’t reply. With such matters, Lu Weixi didn’t feel comfortable calling him directly. Coincidentally, the office elevator had arrived, so she put her phone in her pocket and entered the elevator.

As soon as she got to work, she was summoned by the boss into his office, and sure enough, she was met with a round of scolding. Lu Weixi waited quietly while the boss berated her for about ten minutes. Finally, she spoke, “I will make up the penalty immediately.”

The boss was left speechless, then started to yell again after a while, “Do you think money can settle everything? If this continues, all our clients will be offended! Don’t think your good performance can make up for all this, we are in the service industry; customers are God! Serving as maids while wanting to live like mistresses, why didn’t you lot get born into a wealthy family!”

When Lu Weixi came out, her assistant Xiaochen looked horrified, “Miss Lu, are you okay? You don’t look so well. Miss Lu, Miss Lu?”

Lu Weixi came back to her senses and shook her head lightly, “It’s nothing. Can you get me a black coffee?”

Five minutes later, she stood by the window of the office holding her black coffee, watching the cars go by, her gaze drifting into the distance.

Lu Weixi’s original surname was Bai. Her parents were university classmates. Her father seized an opportunity to make his first fortune, then invested in real estate, growing more and more influential in Yan City’s real estate world. Once her mother had her, she quit her job to be a full-time housewife. Living comfortably and adored by her parents, she became the Bai Family’s spoiled and arrogant “Miss High and Mighty”, as Xue Feifei would say.

She thought she could continue this blessed life, until her parents divorced six years ago. The reason was simple; her father had an affair. The most infuriating part was that the woman he cheated with was her mother’s longtime friend – and her daughter used to be her best friend.

Her mother couldn’t accept such a thing, and neither could she. The dispute resulted in her parents’ divorce, her father marrying that woman, and that woman’s daughter moving into the home she used to live in, calling her dad “Dad” and even stealing her boyfriend at the time; replacing her in every way.

She lived with her mother, life could’ve gone on, but not long after, her mother was diagnosed with liver cancer. Cancer was a bottomless pit; staying alive required an obscene amount of money. The specific drugs at the time weren’t covered by insurance and could cost hundreds of thousands a month; it was terrifyingly expensive. Because the real estate market was weak and she had high debt, her mother didn’t get much from the divorce. She later found out that their father had secretly transferred a large amount of money and hired a lawyer to win the lawsuit, acquiring a large amount of assets.

But because her mother made a big fuss during the divorce, her father was unwilling to help financially. He even emigrated overseas shortly after and cut off all contacts here.

Watching her mother grow thinner day by day on the hospital bed, she finally made a decision.

Lu Weixi took a sip of coffee. The cold black coffee had a lingering aroma, leaving only a rich bitterness.

The reason she could marry into the Qin family, besides the notion of “social compatibility”, had a lot to do with Qin Zhiyou’s grandfather’s fondness for her, her discussions with Mrs. Qin behind closed doors, and “that matter” mentioned by Aunt Hao.
